There is an inexhaustible source of young hopefuls seeking to enter the glamorous world of modeling; each expecting to find their fortune and glory. But where you find the young and the naïve and their dreams, you can bet your bottom dollar you'll also find the scam artists.
Those in the fashion industry, who are sick of the predators that pollute their beloved business with their cons on the innocent, are desperate to get the message out: It costs nothing to become a model. Simply put, if a modeling agency decides you have ‘the look’, it will cost you nothing to sign on with them. They will provide you with professional photos and any and all training. They will invest this money because they are going to make their money back by selling your 'look'.
All too often, modeling schools, camps, searches, contests, pageants, internet listing services and 'scouts' are only out to make money off the unsuspecting by telling them they have to buy expensive photo packages and/or lessons to start their career. Very few career models start out this way. These operations do little to help develop a model's career because most of the time they are not as 'connected' to the inside world of modeling as they say they are. Their interest is solely what's in your pocketbook.
If you truly want to be a model, you must, of all things, be realistic. Here are some guidelines for starting a career in modeling.
To give yourself a bit of the edge over the competition- learn about every aspect of the modeling business. Once you do that, you will be ready to go out and start knocking on doors.
In an industry where your career is over by the time you're 30, modeling agencies are always on the lookout for new talent. Find a reputable agency (or agencies) in your area. Then go right to the source. Agencies will have open calls or you can schedule an interview. It is always a good idea to call or e-mail ahead of time and ask how they prefer to be contacted by new talent. You may just need to send in a photo.
Understand that you may be turned down many times. Don't expect to be signed right away. Most models work non-exclusive (freelance) with several agencies.
You should also know what type of model you are going to be. Unless you are 14-21 years of age, 5'9" or taller with 34B-24-34 measurements and wear a size 6 or smaller (6' and a size 40R for men) don't even think about runway or high fashion modeling. There are plenty of other modeling jobs to work in such as print and there are even models that specialize in parts of the body-like hands, neck and ears.
Although there is no one way that guarantees a career in modeling, you will at first need to be persistent in your efforts to obtain work but never rude, have a willing attitude and be easy to work with. Though few are able to make a living from this type of career it can be good for supplementing your income while providing a nice part time experience to everyday life.
